Where to stay in Zakopane: best areas and practical trade-offs

The best place to stay depends on whether you want restaurants, mountain views, quiet evenings, easy bus connections or a good base for driving around Podhale.

Central Zakopane

Stay near the centre if this is your first visit and you want easy access to restaurants, Krupowki Street, buses and evening walks. The trade-off is noise, traffic and higher prices in peak season. It is still the most convenient choice without a car.

Koscielisko

Koscielisko is better for views, quieter stays and access to western Tatra valleys. It works well for families, couples and travellers with a car. Check the slope and winter access before booking, because beautiful views often mean a higher location.

Poronin and nearby villages

Poronin can be practical if you want to combine Zakopane with Bukowina, Bialka or Murzasichle. It is not as walkable as the centre, but it can offer better value and easier parking. For a road-trip style stay, it can be a smart base.

What to check before booking

  • Parking and winter road access.
  • Real distance to bus stops, restaurants and shops.
  • Whether the mountain view is from your room or only from the property.
  • Heating, ski storage and drying space in winter.
  • Extra fees for cleaning, pets, spa access or breakfast.

Best choice by traveller type

Couples often prefer views, balcony, spa or a quiet apartment. Families usually need a kitchen, parking and more space. Travellers without a car should prioritise central Zakopane or a property close to public transport. If you plan thermal baths and nearby villages, a car-friendly base outside the centre may be better.

Common booking mistakes

The most common mistake is choosing a property only by price or photos. A cheaper room outside the centre may become inconvenient if you need taxis every evening. A beautiful mountain-view apartment may be difficult in winter if the access road is steep. A central room may look perfect, but noise can be a problem during weekends and holidays.

Before booking, check the exact location on the map, read recent reviews and ask about parking, stairs, heating and public transport. If you are travelling with children, also ask about a cot, kitchen equipment and whether the property is easy to reach with luggage.

Best area for a short stay

For one or two nights, convenience usually wins. Stay near central Zakopane if you want to see the town, eat out and avoid logistics. For three or more nights, it becomes more interesting to choose Koscielisko, Poronin or another quieter area, especially if you have a car and want more space.
